When Mr. Muhammad told me that we had been invited to The Holocaust Museum for an event with The Houston Equity Fund I can’t say that I wasn’t confused but naturally, I went anyway.

Bernard and Shirley Kinsey

What we experienced was an exclusive look into the Kinsey collection with the owners Bernard and Shirley Kinsey. It wasn’t just a conversation about art and how to start a collection, it was revolutionary motivation.

Bernard shared a significant amount of information on how to feel proud of your ancestors and what to consider if you wanted to tap into the power of your DNA as a Black American. Not just because being Black means being magnificent, but because of what those who came before us were able to do.

According to The Myth of Absence Black Americans have been erased from significant parts of this country’s history and The Kinsey collection highlights the places that were touched by African Americans even if we didn’t know they were there.

“It’s like getting fixed up for the prom and getting photoshopped out of the pictures. That’s what happens to Black folks…” said Kinsey loosely quoting his son Khalil who is the exhibit curator for his parent’s art collection.

Mr. Muhammad with our new book on the collection

The Kinsey collection was started by Bernard and Shirley in the mid 1990’s and now you can see it until June 23rd at The Holocaust Museum in Houston, TX. If you can’t go to the exhibit at least try to order the collection in book form. Mr. Kinsey suggested reading one page per day.

According to Mr. Muhammad the pages are lengthy and filled with interesting facts and details, written by Khalil Kinsey who tells the story of his mom and dad’s collection throughout the book.
