I had the pleasure of attending the African American Male Wellness Agency – Houston VIP Breakfast last week with my friend Holly Cotton. Endeavors like this one are near and dear to my heart as my father died of bladder cancer when I was just 16.

My dad Albert, like most Black men had an aversion to going to the doctor and so put off the appointment that ultimately could have saved his life. This agency hosts an annual walk that reportedly draws as many as 10,000 Black men who are then given check-ups and information that could save their lives.

The 2nd annual walk will take place April 27th, 2024, at The University of Houston according to the Houston program coordinator, Donnell Cooper ”African American men die 12 years earlier than their white peers and that’s mostly due to not being in tune with and taking care of their bodies. During the 5k we will offer free screenings and be for hypertension. We have the answer to what Houston is looking for in terms of health and wellness support for African American men. This is a free event for families, so we want to see you all out there at U of H on April 27th.” said Cooper, who spoke at the breakfast along with former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner who remarked that since leaving office he has been resting quite a bit but made sure to step out for the occasion.

Mayor Turner mentioned that had he not taken a routine visit to the dentist he would never have discovered a spot on his jaw that had developed into cancer. Several men in attendance stated that they felt like men, African American ones in particular take better care of their vehicles than they do themselves and that’s why events like the walk in April are so important.

The agency is looking for sponsors for the upcoming event to join companies like Houston based Genentech to deliver the best experience and the most support to African American males who attend the walk.
