Networking is a large part of my business as it’s a necessary part of my lead generation process. I especially love going to events that have a networking aspect but are more about socializing with those who are in business and also looking for new business. I enjoy going with clients and organizations I support to events because it gives me a chance to share things about them that they might not remember, and I get to meet new people at the same time.

Last week I accompanied Warren Muhammad, the CEO of the Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development to a luncheon hosted by Frost Bank and the Houston Rockets. The Chamber has a close relationship with Frost Bank and as a thank you to their clients they host the luncheon yearly.

It was a really nice event hosted at The Palm Downtown, the menu was pre-determined and rightfully so as it would have taken all parties in attendance too long to decide on their orders. Additionally, when you choose the only option, you control the cost of the meal (a thing to remember for those of you hosting and covering the cost of events).

Guests were able to chat with and have photographs autographed by some of Houston’s hall of fame basketball players. Former Rockets Calvin Murphy, Elvin Hayes, Rudy Tomjanovich were among those featured at the luncheon. One of the highlights for me as a journalist and media professional was getting to chat with long time announcer and the voice of the Rockets, Craig Ackerman.

Craig shared with me and Mr. Muhammad that he started working with the Rockets right as they were preparing to win their second championship in the 90’s as an intern. I asked him what his job responsibilities were at that time, and he mentioned a lot of jobs that the average 20-year-old in 2024 wouldn’t want to do and recounted that he used to have to cut tape for audio clips.

I found it so interesting that he started as an intern over 30 years ago and now he’s a household name in this great city. It speaks to the fact that you don’t start at the top but if you keep going you will find yourself there. Craig and I agreed that we should have a more in-depth conversation so stay tuned for the interview.

I had a great time and even left with a picture of Calvin Murphy, who is a Taurus, just like me. We were wearing similar colors, so I thought it was appropriate to take a photo.
